Rhodopseudomonas palustris metabolizes p-hydroxybenzoate aerobically via a series of specific reactions which are partly described. The pathway similar to that described for aerobic pseudomonads. The requisite enzymes are absent in extracts of cells grown anaerobically under photosynthetic conditions with p-hydroxybenzoate, benzoate and malate, or aerobically with benzoate or malate. An intermediate of the reaction sequence presumably induces in a retrograde fashion.
