Growth rates for the total brain and for ten brain-components were estimated with respect to the body-weight in a series of embryos of Artibeus jamaicensis. Differences exist between the growth rhythms demonstrated by some of the components and such differences are tentatively related to the initiation of functions and to early postnatal behaviour. Also there is a clear indication that certain phylogenetically older parts of the brain grow at a slower rate than certain younger ones. A comparison is made between the embryonic unispecific sequence and an adult multispecific series.
