Recent experiments involving the study of crack contours and neighbouring regions in the electron microscope are analyzed. The present work represents an extension of previous investigations on the crystallography of separation. The materials studied are a carbon steel, two austenitic stainless steels, zirconium and zinc. These materials are compared as to the mechanism of plastic deformation and atomic. separation during crack propagation.
