Membrane filter culture was used as a model system for the investigation of the growth of Rhizopus oligosporus in solid-state fermentation. The biuret method gave more accurate estimations of protein than the Folin-Lowry method. However, due to the change in the protein content of the biomass during the fermentation, protein cannot be considered to be a reliable index of growth in solid-state fermentation.
