A methodology to characterize the resistance of rubber compounds to crack propagation (fracture toughness) is presented. A constitutive model based on the crack layer theory is utilized to extract the specific energy of damage γ*, a material parameter characteristic of the material's resistance to crack propagation and the dissipative characteristic, β.
