A brief history of the contribution of studies of discrete radio sources to cosmological research is presented. Particular emphasis is given to the identification of complete samples of radio sources and the determination of their spectra and redshifts. The evolutionary history of these objects with cosmic epoch can now be related to the star-formation history of galaxies as a whole. The lessons to be learned from this story for the planning of future research programmes and new facilities are discussed.
