Since the late 1980s, supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) instrumentation has evolved from a chemical engineering research tool into large-scale commercial applications (e.g. the extraction of caffeine from coffee beans) and finally into the analytical laboratory as an efficient preparation method for a wide range of chemical compounds from a variety of samples. This chapter reviews SFE instrumentation as it applies to the analytical laboratory.
