Near-Infrared Spectroscopy of Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies

Abstract

We report K band spectra of fourteen ultraluminous (LIR ≥ 1012L⊙) galaxies from the IRAS Extended Bright Galaxy Sample (EBGS) and ten less luminous EBGS galaxies. For the lower luminosity systems, good correlations are found between the H2 v=1-0S(1) and far-infrared (FIR) fluxes, and Brγ and FIR fluxes. Compared to the less luminous galaxies, the ultraluminous galaxies have similar S(1)/FIR ratios, but are deficient by factors of several in Brγ/FIR. The simplest interpretation of this effect is that the H2 emission comes from optically thin regions, whereas the Brγ is produced in nuclei optically thick even at 2μm.
