The CD antigens are a widespread family of cell surface glycoproteins which serve as differentiation markers for most cell types. They subserve a variety of functions including those of receptors for MHC recognition, antibody, complement and cytokines. Although primarily cell surface proteins, some may be shed into the circulation during cell activation or turnover and appear as soluble serum constituents.
