
Two special features complicate the diagnosis of disease in the maxillo-facial region. The first is the existence of a range of pathological conditions arising directly from the teeth and the dental formative tissues. The second is the unique anatomical structure composed of bone covered largely by a relatively thin layer of mucoperiosteum pierced by calcified structures.
