
The three semicircular canals lie at 90 degree angles to each other. The crista of each semicircular canal is stimulated by rotatory movement in its own plane. This enables perception of rotatory movement in any plane. These canals also respond to non-natural stimuli, such as cold or warm water applied in the ear canal, or electrical stimulation to the vestibule.
