The central and most dramatic symptom of this taxonic grouping of behaviors is that the victim breaks out of his world of normal social routines and expectations with a sudden flight into a dissociated world. Sometimes it is a literal running off, sometimes simply a mental withdrawal (as in Foulks’s cases). But regardless of which type is chosen, there is a period of retreat, of “time out” from reality and short while in which the person performs bizarre acts (e.g., tearing off clothing) and utters phrases not normally permitted or usually heard. Occasionally violence will occur, seemingly directed at those nearby. During the attack the person is oblivious to events and other persons around him and afterwards, collapsing from exhaustion, does not remember (ostensibly at least) what happened.
