Experience with the St. Jude medical heart valve prosthesis

Abstract

During the past 25 years, numerous different technical conceptions for the development of a suitable artificial heart valve have been followed, only a few of which led to clinical applicability. Among those prostheses which reached the stage of clinical testing, only a small number have proved to be reliable for a certain space of time. The so-called Bileaflet-Valves steadily have been gaining ground upon the Caged-Ball-Valves (e.g. the Starr-Edwards- and the Smeloff- Cutter-Valve) as well as the Tilting-Disc-Prostheses (e.g. Bjork-Shiley-, Omniscience-, Lillehei-Kaster-Prosthesis) over the last few years.
