Abstract

The problem of medical management of the elderly is reported as a major issue from the 1980s, since in earlier years old age was more or less a contraindication for elective major surgery. Particularly in cardiac surgery mean age has increased considerably, from 52 years in the 1980s to 62 years today. In fact it is expected that in the year 2010 22% of the population will be older than 65 years.
