Abstract

Das kleine unscheinbare „Unkraut“ Arabidopsis thaliana nutzt in der freien Natur kurzzeitige Storungen der Vegetationsdecke, um in kurzester Zeit seinen Lebenszyklus zu vollenden und dann in Form von Samen auf die nachste gunstige Gelegenheit zu warten. Aufgrund dieser sogenannten Therophyten-Strategie ist alles bei der Ackerschmalwand (Arabidopsis thaliana) auf schnelle Entwicklung und maximale Samenbildung hin ausgerichtet. Das Genom ist die Minimalversion dessen, was eine Pflanze braucht, und der Lebenszyklus ist in weniger als zwei Monaten vollendet. Dadurch wurde Arabidopsis zum zentralen Modellorganismus der Pflanzenwissenschaften. Zentral sind Mutantenkollektionen, die uber chemische Mutagenese oder aber uber Insertion von T-DNA erzeugt wurden und uber offentliche Datenbanken weltweit vernetzt sind. Dadurch ist es moglich, fur ein Gen von Interesse sehr schnell die Funktion zu ermitteln. Damit liesen sich die genetischen Grundlagen zahlreicher fur Pflanzen wichtiger Entwicklungsvorgange (Wahrnehmung von Lichtreizen, Bluteninduktion, Blutenmorphogenese) aufklaren. Die Embryonalentwicklung von Arabidopsis verlauft jedoch, fur Pflanzen untypisch, stereotyp, vermutlich eine Folge der okologischen Strategie dieser Art. An diesem Beispiel wird das Thema Grenzen der Ubertragbarkeit diskutiert. Eine weitere Limitierung des Systems, das Fehlen einer effizienten Technik zur homologen Rekombination, konnte in den letzten Jahren durch die Anwendung der CRISPR-Cas Methode uberwunden werden.
