This chapter surveys the economics of international banking. It begins by reviewing recent waves of growth in cross-border banking and evaluating the fundamental elements influencing this growth. Next it turns to a consideration of industrial organization issues in multinational banking, including the choice between foreign direct investment versus acquisitions of foreign branches. The remainder of the chapter discusses recent developments in real-resource-based analyses of cross-border trade in banking services that apply traditional theories of international trade to the balancing industry.
