Abstract

Nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (AChR) are prototypical members of the neurotransmitter-gated superfamily of ion channels (ionotropic neurotransmitter receptors; see Figure 7.1; see chapters 2,5, and 6 in this volume).‡ AChR mediate some of the effects of the endogenous neurotransmitter, acetylcholine (ACh), and they are principal biological targets of the tobacco alkaloid, nicotine, which generally mimics actions of ACh at AChR.
