The basic steps in order to set up a finite difference scheme are: • definition of a space discretization by which the mesh points are distributed along families of non-intersecting lines, • development of the unknown functions by means of Taylor series expansion (TSE) around grid points • replacement of derivative terms in the partial differential equations (PDE) with equivalent finite difference expressions.
