Abstract

Erste Uberlegungen zum LHC gab es bereits in den 1980er Jahren, in Konkurrenz zum US-amerikanischen Projekt des Superconducting Super Collider (SSC). Nach der Aufgabe des SSC war der Weg frei zum Bau des LHC, dessen supraleitende Magnete auf eine Temperatur von 1,9 K gekuhlt werden mussen, kalter als das Universum, um grostechnisch im diesem Masstab bisher nicht erreichte Magnetfelder von mehr als 8 T zu erzielen.
