Tetanus has been known to mankind for thousands of years. The disease is ubiquitous, but it particularly kills many persons in tropical countries, where the disease is called by various local names (Bytchenko 1967). The belief that neonatal tetanus (NT) is linked with divine intervention is reflected in the Biblical story of the death of the son of King David and Bathsheba (2 Samuel, 11 and 12).
