Research with animals has indicated that there is a genetic component in the etiology of multiple myeloma (this volume). Human studies have also provided some clues to the genetic basis of the disease. Given the paucity of known environmental risk factors for multiple myeloma an understanding of the role that genetic factors may play is crucial. Genetic factors may help explain the increased incidence of multiple myeloma in blacks as compared with whites.
