There are a number of situations where data parallelization is to be preferred over geometric parallelization. An example of such a situation that we have already encountered is that of a system with long-range interactions, such as Coulombic or gravitational interactions. In such a system all atoms or particles inside the computational cell interact with each other. A geometric partitioning would neither reduce the complexity nor spread the workload evenly among the processors, since all parts of the system must communicate with each other.
