Abstract

Some metals are normal constituents of living tissues (calcium, magnesium, iron, selenium, zinc, copper, sodium, and potassium); some (copper and selenium) are only needed in small amounts, and larger concentrations are nearly always due to industrial or environmental contamination, while the occurrence of others (lead, mercury, thorium, cadmium, gold, etc.) is always pathological and reflects contamination.
