
A great number of different implants have been recommended for the stabilization of trochanteric fractures. As discussed before (Sect. 2), the treatment of stable trochanteric fractures is easy with any implant, but problems are frequent with unstable fracture types. An optimal implant should fulfill the following criteria: 1. The operation should be technically easy. Trochanteric fractures are very frequent, and every surgeon should be able to stabilize these fractures correctly by a short and technically not very demanding procedure. 2. The implant should be suitable, if possible, for all fracture types. Immediate weight bearing should also be possible for unstable fracture types, as we know that elderly patients are not able to bear weight partially. 3. The complication rate should be low (infection and implant complications).
