Sickle cell anemia is not an infectious disease, but rather a genetic disorder. It is characterized by an abnormality in the hemoglobin which causes the red blood cells to be deformed (sickle shaped instead of flat). Victims’ blood is not able to transport oxygen properly and the vital organs are starved out; death occurs ordinarily before reproductive maturity.
