Research on the artificial heart in the USSR is progressing along two lines: (1) the creation of a cardiac assist device (CAD) to serve as a partial replacement of the heart’s function or that of one of its ventricles and (2) the development of an orthotopic prosthesis for the heart (TAH). The need for a TAH is very great in patients with a failing heart that is not able to ensure adequate blood circulation. Left ventricular assist devices (LVAD) are currently being extensively used in assisted circulation, and since 1966 several CADs have been applied in clinical practice. This paper will treat the CAD, and the TAH will be dealt with in contribution No. 32.
