Abstract

Since the late 1970s, railways have made a comeback with the introduction of high-speed trains. Until then, railways had the image of being inefficient and trains had a speed of only 100-130 km/h. Nowadays trains can regularly achieve three times those speeds and national railway organisations feel the pressure for reorganisation to improve the quality of services and to operate on a more profitable basis.
