The transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) is a nonsurgical method of decompressing the portal venous system. TIPS involves the creation of a portosystemic shunt by forming an intrahepatic tract between the hepatic and portal veins using angiographic techniques. From a hemodynamic point of view, TIPS is a small caliper H-shunt with partial decompression of portal hypertension. In 1989, Richter et al. described the first clinical use of a metallic stent for TIPS. During the past few years, TIPS has been shown to be an effective treatment alternative in patients suffering from complications due to portal hypertension.
