Salivary Gland-Type Tumors

Abstract

Salivary gland-type tumors of the thymus represent a subgroup of tumors and a subject that for the most part has been ignored in the literature. The attention that salivary gland-type tumors in the thorax get is essentially due to those tumors that occur in the lung. The tumoral conditions that will be discussed in this chapter include benign tumors (thymic hyperplasia with lymphoepithelial sialadenitis (LESA)-like features, sebaceous lymphadenoma, mixed tumor (pleomorphic adenoma) and malignant tumors (mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC), epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma, adenoid cystic carcinoma and basaloid carcinoma. This chapter will be presented from the practical point of view for the practicing pathologist who may be called upon to interpret these tumors. Clinical, pathological, histopathological, immunohistochemical, radiological, gross, molecular features will be discussed, as well as differential diagnoses and staging.
