
As there is a national and global trend to encourage and promote the benefits of breastfeeding in newborns, there has been a rise in the discussion and controversy around the impact of congenital ankyloglossia on breastfeeding for mothers. Ever since the public health message promoting the significant health, social, economic, and other benefits of breastfeeding, there seems to be an increase in the last decade regarding the diagnosis and utilization of frenotomy for ankyloglossia in newborns. We present some of the clinical considerations, evidence, and controversy surrounding ankyloglossia, more commonly referred to as a tongue-tie and dysphagia in newborns and children.
