With the advent of echocardiography and its ability to convey information on pulmonary artery pressures, the use of widespread pulmonary artery catheterization (PAC, or referred to as Swan-Ganz) has diminished. These catheters are still used in cardiac surgery, however, making the data interpretations and measurements important for anesthesiologist. It should also be kept in mind that the “choosing wisely” initiative has endorsed the judicious use of pulmonary artery catheters (Jean Louis Vincent, Crit Care 229, 2011). A pulmonary artery catheter contains a CVP port, the PA port (the port with the balloon mounted on it), and a third port for infusion drugs if needed.
