The lymphatics run adjacent to the arteries and veins. They return lymph fluid to the circulation via a single-way end system. This fluid is collected in lymphatic capillaries, transported to afferent collecting vessels, and delivered to lymph nodes. Lymph fluid exits the nodes via efferent collecting vessels and is returned to the circulation either by the thoracic duct or right lymphatic duct. Lymphatic vessels’ three primary functions are to transport: (1) lymph from veins back to the circulatory system, (2) chylomicrons from the intestines to the thoracic duct, and (3) immune cells to lymph nodes.
