The somatosensory cortex

Abstract

Mammals vary in the number of cortical areas involved in processing somatosensory information. Most mammals appear to have areas S1, S2, and PV, as well as strip-like somatosensory areas along the rostral and caudal borders of S1. In monkeys and other higher primates, cortex caudal to S1 is differentiated into areas 1 and 2, each also representing cutaneous receptors, and there is evidence for a ventral somatosensory area, VS, adjoining S2. Processing is more serial in monkeys so that the responsiveness of S2 depends on S1.
