Abstract

Das Urteil Truesdells «Hitherto thermodynamics had been like any other theory in mathematical physics, pretty largely a model for the way things are. In Clausius’ hands it now begins to change into a model for the way things are not» (TRUESDELL 1980, p.337), ist eher verwirrend: es verweist zum einen auf Clausius’ wegweisende Untersuchungen zur Theorie der Carnot-Mayerschen Thermodynamik und zum anderen auf seine molekularen Vorstellungen, deren Fortentwicklung durch ihn selbst sowie durch zahlreiche Nachfolger eher eine restaurative Phase der Problemgeschichte der Naturforschung einleitete. Diese januskopfrge Charakterisierung wird der Bedeutung speziell seiner hier in Rede stehenden ersten Arbeit zur kinetischen Theorie allerdings nicht gerecht. Wenn Truesdell sich an anderer Stelle uber den Rang dieser ersten Arbeit zur Carnot-Mayerschen Thermodynamik mit den Worten auserte: «Clausius exhibits here the quality of a great discoverer» (ibd. p.204), so mochte ich sein Lob unter einem bislang wenig beachteten Gesichtspunkt auch auf die Abhandlung zur kinetischen Theorie ausdehnen. Bei deren Lekture fallt auf, das im Hauptteil der im Original aus sieben Druckseiten bestehenden Publikation keine einzige Gleichung vorkommt. Dafur findet man dort die gewissermasen programmatische Beschreibung der Molekulbewegung in allen drei Phasen, inklusive beim Phasen Wechsel (Verdampfung).
