Abstract

Der erste Anstos zu French Andersons kunftiger Forschung in der Gentherapie kam mit der Post. Man schrieb das Jahr 1952, als das Vorlesungsverzeichnis des Harvard College im Briefkasten seiner Eltern in Tulsa (Oklahoma) landete. Die Broschure schilderte Harvards Welt der intellektuellen Moglichkeiten. Eine von ihnen fiel dem High School Senior besonders ins Auge: Biophysikalische Chemie 184, ein Kurs in physikalischer Chemie unter der Leitung von John T. Edsall. Edsall war ein Experte in der Protein-Chemie, der biologisch wichtige Molekule wie jene untersuchte, die bei der Muskelkontraktion beteiligt sind, oder jene, die den Sauerstoff im Blut transportieren. Fur Anderson — einen jungen Mann, der in der Wissenschaft nach vereinheitlichenden Ideen suchte — ergab es einen Sinn, die Korperfunktionen vom Standpunkt der Molekule aus zu untersuchen. Die Hochschulwissenschaft hatte ihn gelehrt, das alle Materie — lebendig oder nicht — aus Atomen bestand. Wie bei einer Babuschka-Puppe «stecken» Atome im Molekul, Molekule «stecken» in Proteinen, Kohlenhydraten und Fetten, diese «stecken» in Zellen, und Zellen «stecken» im Korper. Die innerste Puppe zu betrachten, mochte etwas uber den Aufbau und die Funktion der auseren aussagen. Die Molekule des Korpers zu untersuchen, mochte zu Einsichten uber Krankheiten und, davon ausgehend, zur Entwicklung neuer Heilmethoden fuhren.
