Experiential education in the corrections component of the justice system should be considered in terms of institutional and community corrections. In the past, institutional correctional facilities such as jails, prisons, and other secure facilities were under the jurisdiction of a local, state, or federal agency, and policies and operations were closed to outsiders. Community corrections originated with volunteers, specifically with probation, and although community corrections usually come under a government agency, other programs, including community halfway houses and specialized programs for the treatment of drug alcohol and sex offenders, are under private administration.
