Resilience is defined as the capacity to recover from stress or the ability to withstand the effects of stressors that are typically associated with negative outcomes. From a phenomenological viewpoint, it is described as the bodily self’s exuberant directedness toward a lifeworld of meaning possibilities. From an existential perspective, it is depicted as a form of life energy or creative vitality that enables the individual to courageously confront one’s normal and existential anxieties, which include threats to one’s being and to one’s identificatory value-laden meanings. It is this creative vitality that keeps us realistically hopeful and helps us cope constructively with the inevitable setbacks of everyday living. Maturity requires balancing vitality with vulnerability.
