Data from several studies suggest that individuals with PD exhibit improvements in motor control when cued to increase attention and effort when performing several activities of daily living. The variability in speech motor impairment reported across studies and patients may be influenced by the extent to which a speaker relies more heavily on either goal-directed or habitual control in a given speaking environment. The current paper will briefly review changes in acoustic features of articulation associated with adopting more goal-directed speaking styles such a clear or loud speech and discuss related implications for the automatic assessment of parkinsonian speech.
