In this paper we will show some properties of the Fibonacci numbers from the mathematical and the historical points of view. We will focus on their applications concerning art, music and geometry, especially in connection with the golden section. In fact, these important numbers, known in the West since the Middle Ages as a solution of the famous problem of the growth of rabbits, found numerous and important applications in many different fields.
