Protocols RTP/RTCP

Abstract

The protocol RTP is presented here as the protocol that supports the transport of real-time information over packet-oriented networks, the service that is becoming extremely important nowadays. Although the protocol RTP itself does not improve the quality of service offered to the higher layer, it allows the higher layer to do it; the mechanisms that RTP uses for this purpose are explained. The protocol RTCP, which is always running in parallel with RTP and supports the session management, although it is not a signalling protocol, is also described.
