Luxation injuries in the permanent dentition are relatively common. The injury can be mild, as in the case of a concussion of the tooth, to very severe when the tooth is avulsed completely out of the socket. Other luxation injuries include extrusion, intrusion, and lateral luxation, where the tooth is pushed in toward the palate or out toward the lips. It is also common for there to be concomitant tooth fractures along with luxation injuries. An accident causing luxation of a tooth may also result in damage to the supporting bone, the pulp, and periodontium. Because of this, a thorough evaluation of the patient is indicated anytime there is a traumatic dental injury. In pre-adolescents and adolescents, there is still a concern for intentional injuries, so this should always be kept in mind and investigated further if suspicions arise regarding the cause of an injury.
