Prior to 2004, less than 5% of surgeries for colon and rectal cancer were performed laparoscopically. With multiple prospective randomized controlled trials published in the last 15 years comparing laparoscopic versus open surgery revealing short-term benefits and no significant difference in long-term oncologic outcomes, minimally invasive surgery for oncologic indications is now widely performed. This chapter specifically focuses on laparoscopic approach for left and sigmoid colon cancers. Surgical benchmarks have been defined by the National Comprehensive Cancer Network and are described in the chapter.
