The channels between gender equality and economic growth are complex; and considerable debate has emerged regarding both the direction of causality and the distributional consequences of growth. Gender-aware empirical research has shown that the relationship is contingent on a variety of factors, including the measure of gender equality, the time dimension of the analysis, and the structure of the economy and its institutions. This entry reviews the research on how gender equality and the macroeconomy interact and the kind of macroeconomic policies that promote gender-equitable well-being.
