Abstract

Les premieres epizooties de la maladie sevissant chez les volailles, connue en tant que maladie de Newcastle (ND), sont apparues en 1926 a Java, en Indonesie (Kraneveld 1926) et a Newcastle, en Angleterre (Doyle 1927). L’appellation «maladie de Newcastle» fut temporairement attribuee par Doyle, afin d’eviter une denomination descriptive qui aurait pu etre source de confusion avec d’autres maladies (Doyle 1935). Cependant l’utilisation de ce terme s’est perpetuee, bien que l’on emploie a present couramment le synonyme «paramyxovirus aviaire de type 1» (APMV-1) pour se referer au virus ND (NDV). APMV-1 a parfois ete utilise pour decrire les souches de NDV de faible virulence afin d’eviter l’emploi de l’expression NDV. En effet, dans les definitions utilisees par l’Organisation mondiale de la sante animale (Alexander 2008) ainsi que par d’autres agences internationales, le terme NDV est reserve aux virus virulents.
