
Despite advances in the treatment of acute renal failure (ARF), the overall mortality rate has improved little since the 1960s.1 ARF itself, regardless of other illnesses, increases the risk of severe complications and mortality.2 ARF complicates 5% of hospital and 30% of intensive care unit (ICU) admissions. Acute mortality approaches 50%; of those who survive ARF, 50% have persistent deterioration of renal function.1
