Hepatic lipogenesis is subject to both fine (short-term) and coarse (long-term) control mechanisms. Coarse control, i.e., adaptive change in enzyme quantity, is recognized as being important for nutritional and hormonal control of lipogenesis (for reviews see Gibson, Lyons, Scott, and Muto, 1972; Goodridge, 1975; Lakshmanan, Nepokroeff, and Porter, 1972; Numa and Yamashita, 1974). Hepatic enzymes of lipogenesis which appear to respond to this mode of regulation include acetyl-CoA carboxylase (E.C. 6.4. 1.2), fatty acid synthetase system, stearyl CoA desaturase system, glucokinase (E.C. 2.7.1.2), glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (E. C. 1.1.1.49), pyruvate kinase (E.C. 2.7.1.40), phosphofructokinase (E.C. 2.7.1.11), and the citrate cleavage enzyme (E.G. 4.1.3.8), and malic enzyme (E.C. 1.1.1.38).
