In addition to the angiotensin II receptor blockers, the angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors, and the calcium channel blockers, which are discussed in other chapters, there are other peripheral vasodilators that include a wide variety of compounds with highly disparate mechanisms of action. These drugs also differ enormously in their effects on small and large arteries and in their differential vasodilatory actions on arterial and venous vessels. Several drugs have poorly defined pharmacologic profiles and many nonspecific agents have little clinical usefulness despite having been available for many years, but some drugs in this broad group have a valuable place in cardiovascular therapy.
