Abstract

It has been shown that heart failure frequently occurs in the absence of left ventricular (LV) systolic dysfunction, and diastolic dysfunction is considered to be the underlying cause for this phenotype of heart failure: isolated diastolic heart failure. LV diastolic dysfunction is an important determinant of symptoms and prognosis of heart failure, even in patients with systolic failure. The development of Doppler echocardiography has provided us much knowledge about the clinical features of diastolic dysfunction and diastolic failure. In this chapter, the current concept of diastolic heart failure and diastolic dysfunction will be discussed.
