The ovaries are solid, slightly nodular, pink-gray bodies with the approximate proportions of unshelled almonds. They are situated on either side of the uterus, behind and below the uterine tubes. The human ovary undergoes marked changes in size, shape, and position during its lifetime in addition to the histologic changes brought about by various endocrine stimuli. It is important to appreciate the changes in size, shape, and consistency of the ovary that occur at different ages as well as during any given menstrual cycle. The ovaries are usually not symmetric, with the right ovary often larger than the left.
