In the decade since reliable methods of freezing mouse embryos were first described (Whittingham et al., 1972; Wilmut, 1972a) methods have been developed for freezing the embryos of a number of other species. Frozen embryos have been used in the treatment of human infertility, in farm animal breeding, and in biological research. During this period, the procedures have also been simplified.
